Samuel Spees is an independent artist, designer, and craftsperson from Dayton Ohio. While pursuing football at Centre College in Kentucky he was drawn to the process of glassmaking, which became his new favorite ‘sport.’ In 2022, Sam began collaborating with his partner in life, Blaine Steiner. This partnership has offered a collaborative approach to the work that now comes out of this studio. Sam’s work embodies the mental process and physical skills of glassmaking. He uses traditional Venetian techniques, as well as American influence to make playful, experimental, and technical work. Blaine focus challenges the expectations of glass, in both scale and process. In turn they create a wide array of both functional and sculptural objects through a lens perceiving the world through memories and sensory experiences. Currently they reside in Nashville, TN.
Spees Studios is their combined studio in which they focus on functional glass-ware, decor, and art. Pontus Design Co. has become an extension of their glassware business, focusing more on custom furniture, lighting, and large scale installations.
